Steven Paul Smith, known professionally as Elliott Smith, is an American singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. Smith was born in Omaha, Nebraska, grew up primarily in Texas, and spent most of his life in Portland, Oregon, where he was first famous. Smith's main instrument is the guitar, but he also plays the piano, clarinet, bass, drums and harmonica. Smith has a distinctive vocal style characterized by a "whispering and fine cast" and often uses multiple grooves to create layers of vocals, textures and harmonies. After playing in the rock band Heatmiser for a few years, Smith began his solo career in 1994, with releases on independent labels Cavity Search and Kill Rock Stars. In 1997, he signed with DreamWorks Records, where he recorded two albums.
